From managing information to knowledge creation

brain-computer2Knowledge is power! However, today this is a truth with modification since knowledge becomes outdated much faster than before. Consequently, you will gain less if you save the knowledge in your own hideouts. The challenge for companies and the public sector but also schools is to manage to translate individual knowledge into organizational awareness and then to collaboratively manage the knowledge-base with constant updates, focus on usability and pedagogy.

Manage knowledge

Traditionally, after the IT-technology breakthrough, too many organizations have been misled by the idea that if we only have an intranet to publish reports and other documents we have a satisfactory knowledge management solution. The truth is that an Intranet is a system for managing information. Effective management of knowledge requires a lot more.

The key to modern knowledge management is a combination of technology and to inspire to the involvement of all employees. In the school system, this would mean teachers and students. The center of the knowledge-production is the technological platform, while the content is produced by everyone involved. This form of organizing leads to greater involvement because everyone has the opportunity to be both an educator and a student. At the same time, it reduces the risk of bureaucratisation of knowledge. In addition to written documents are multimedia and interactive eLearning modules vital tool for structuring knowledge.

Securing quality

This can include wikis, multimedia, podcasts, blogs, but also interactive exercises with feedback, both as exclusive course materials for a specific topic, but also to summarize the essence of a text.

In order to secure that the awareness of the subject is received by the members of the organization feedback via a performance monitoring module is required. It should include statistics relating to the student’s performance and results in the eLearning-module. In this way, eLearning, meaning all IT-pedagogical tools, ensures the quality of the students learning efforts.

However, this requires that the eLearning modules in the knowledge creation system are already quality secured. In the case the modules are produced by a student it is usually teachers’ responsibility to secure the quality. For eLearning-modules produced by a teacher or subject-expert in a company quality managers would secure the knowledge applicability. They can also serve as a support for the knowledge creation system. But responsible for the modules are those who have produced the material. Firstly, the student should, therefore, seek the source of the knowledge with questions and comments about the content. Especially since it avoids the risk of bureaucratisation, no department will have the monopoly on the knowledge creation. Instead, self-organisation and accessibility, besides qualitative technical solutions would be the effective infrastructure and method for knowledge management.

Key to effective knowledge management

In an organizational perspective, an individual’s isolated knowledge is not the force it once was.

Involvement, accessibility, brain-adaption, the right knowledge to the right person at the right time and usability is, therefore, the key to effective knowledge management. These keys require knowledge to create multimedia and interactive eLearning modules. Something that ultimately means that training in IT-pedagogy should be a natural part in school and in the working life in the years to come.
